Anyone choosing a payment gateway for WhatsApp sellers should start from a detail that most comparisons leave out: WhatsApp's native in-chat payments are live only in India, Brazil and, for businesses, Singapore. In the United States, the UK and the EU, a seller on WhatsApp still gets paid by dropping a payment link into the conversation and watching for the confirmation. The gateway behind that link therefore matters more than the messaging app. Below we rank three gateways that generate shareable links without asking merchants to upload documents, explain what WhatsApp Pay and the WhatsApp Business Platform really provide and where, and spell out the compliance responsibilities that remain yours whichever link you send.

Quick answer: PayMeGate takes first place in this comparison for WhatsApp sellers who want a single dashboard that issues both card and crypto payment links. Signing up requires basic account and business details but no identity or business-document uploads; the platform fee starts at 1% on top of the provider's fee; links take Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal, SEPA and the main cryptocurrencies; and settlement lands as USDC or another supported crypto in a wallet you control. Customer-side verification may still apply depending on the method chosen. Paymento suits crypto-only sellers at 0.5% with non-custodial payouts, and BTCPay Server is the free, self-hosted route for anyone willing to run their own software. WhatsApp Pay itself does not operate in the US.

What "WhatsApp payments" means in 2026

Three different things get called WhatsApp payments: WhatsApp Pay for consumers, the WhatsApp Business API payment flow for merchants in India, and payment links sent in a WhatsApp chat. Only the last one is available to a US seller, and the first two matter only in Meta's key markets for payments, India and Brazil.

WhatsApp Pay in India and Brazil: peer to peer and business payments

WhatsApp Pay began as a trial in India in February 2018, received phased approval from India's National Payments Corporation in February 2020 and launched publicly in November 2020 on UPI rails, according to YCloud's history of the product. Brazil followed, running on Meta Pay (formerly Facebook Pay) with supported debit and credit cards and bank transfers. In Singapore, WhatsApp Pay works for business payments only; customers can pay verified businesses but person-to-person transfers are not supported. YCloud states plainly that WhatsApp Pay is not available in the United States or most North American markets and that Meta has not announced a timeline, so the supported countries remain India and Brazil, plus Singapore for business payments.

How to activate WhatsApp Pay where it exists

To activate WhatsApp Pay in India you open the WhatsApp app, go to Payments, add a bank account that supports UPI, verify the bank details with the phone number linked to your WhatsApp account and set a UPI PIN. In Brazil the same menu asks you to add a debit or credit card under Meta Pay and create a six-digit Meta Pay PIN (formerly the Facebook Pay PIN). After that, the peer to peer feature lets you send money and receive money inside the same app, and a business with a verified WhatsApp Business account can receive payments from customers in the same chat.

Transaction limits

Transaction limits follow local regulation: Infobip and Razorpay cite a ₹100,000 per-transaction cap for personal transfers over UPI in India and R$1,000 limits in Brazil, with daily caps on peer to peer payments, and WhatsApp payments must comply with those local limits regardless of the app.

The WhatsApp Business API: payment configuration and the order details message

For businesses on the WhatsApp Business Platform in India, Meta's developer documentation describes a native flow built on the WhatsApp Business API. The technical setup starts with a payment configuration: the merchant links a payment gateway account with one of Meta's payment partners (Razorpay, PayU, BillDesk or Zaakpay) in WhatsApp Business Manager, and that payment config then appears on every order. The merchant sends an order details message, an interactive message with a unique reference_id, the item list and the total; the customer pays by UPI, credit or debit cards or net banking without leaving the chat thread; and a webhook reports the transaction status so the merchant can confirm payment and update the order status. The status values include pending, captured, failed and a canceled status, and a refund object carries any later refund. Businesses are expected to verify payment status through the payment lookup API before fulfilling, to set velocity limits against abuse, and to route disputes through their payment partner rather than WhatsApp support. The supported payment methods (UPI, cards and net banking) vary by partner, and each payment partner publishes its own payment configuration guide. It is a well-designed business solution for conversational commerce, with WhatsApp Pay as the consumer-facing side of the same rails, but it is India-only; a US or European merchant cannot integrate WhatsApp payments this way.

Everywhere else, "WhatsApp payment gateway" really means a gateway whose links you send in WhatsApp. The seller sends a link generated by a payment gateway. The customer taps it, pays on the gateway's hosted page by card, wallet or crypto, and the seller gets a webhook or dashboard notification. Each payment link is tied to a specific amount and order, the seller can track payment status, and no card data ever passes through the chat, which keeps sensitive payment information out of WhatsApp's end-to-end encrypted but screenshot-friendly message box. This is the model the three gateways below support, and it works from the WhatsApp Business app, a WhatsApp business account on the API, or a personal WhatsApp account alike.

Key benefits of collecting payments in the chat

  • One conversation from question to receipt. Customers prefer to ask, decide and pay in the same chat instead of being pushed to a website; conversational commerce converts because the payment request arrives while the intent is fresh, and you send customers one link rather than a checkout URL and a login.
  • A paper trail per order. The order details, the payment link and the confirmation message sit together in the chat thread, which makes business transactions easy to reconcile.
  • Works for local businesses and digital sellers alike. A bakery taking pre-orders for physical goods and a coach selling sessions use the same payment requests.
  • No card data in the chat. The customer receives a link, pays on a hosted page, and the seller never sees credit or debit cards or bank details. WhatsApp's end to end encryption protects the message in transit, but it does not make a chat a safe place to type card numbers.
  • Fast confirmation. A webhook tells you the payment status within seconds, so you can send the customer a confirmation message and dispatch.

Merchant KYC, customer KYC and KYB: what "no KYC" can and cannot mean

  • Merchant KYC or KYB is the identity and business verification a gateway performs on you before you can accept payments. Traditional processors ask for ID, proof of address, company registration and bank statements. PayMeGate and Paymento do not request document uploads at signup; BTCPay has no signup at all.
  • Customer KYC is verification of the person paying. For crypto paid from the customer's own wallet there is usually none. For card payments that settle as crypto, the card provider behind the link may ask the customer for an instant ID check, especially above small amounts. PayMeGate's FAQ says exactly this: customers "may need instant ID verification via mobile camera; some providers allow bypassing this for smaller orders."
  • What stays with you. None of these gateways is a bank or a licensed money transmitter for you. Anti-money-laundering obligations, sanctions screening of your own customers where the law requires it, consumer-protection duties, refunds and tax reporting remain your responsibility. PayMeGate's FAQ puts it as "document-light merchant onboarding does not mean anonymous or rules-free use."

How we chose

  1. Payment links you can send to customers in WhatsApp without a website, generated from a dashboard or a single API call, so you can collect payments on WhatsApp from day one.
  2. Signup requirements read from the provider's own pages today, with "no documents" stated only where the provider states it.
  3. Fees and minimum order amounts read from the pricing page, with a worked example at a typical chat-commerce ticket.
  4. Payment methods the customer can actually use, since WhatsApp buyers in different countries expect cards, wallets or crypto.
  5. Acceptable-use terms and geographic restrictions, because a gateway whose terms exclude your country is not an option.
  6. Settlement: where the money lands, in what asset, and who controls the wallet.

1. PayMeGate: best payment gateway for WhatsApp sellers overall

PayMeGate ranks first because it is the only one of the three whose link lets a WhatsApp customer pay by card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal or bank transfer as well as crypto, while the seller signs up without uploading documents and receives crypto settlement in a wallet they configure.

Key features

  • Payment links in one request from the dashboard or the REST API, with webhook callbacks when a payment settles and scoped API keys with live and test modes.
  • Card, wallet, bank and crypto methods on the same link: Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Maestro, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal, Revolut, SEPA and local bank transfers, plus Bitcoin, Ethereum, USDC, USDT, Solana and more with a unique address and QR per order.
  • No merchant ID or business-document uploads at signup, as stated on the no-KYC payment gateway page and the FAQ.
  • Mass payouts with up to 19 splits, useful for sellers who pay suppliers or partners from each order.
  • Plugins for WooCommerce and WHMCS if you later add a storefront.

Best for

Sellers whose WhatsApp customers expect to pay by card or Apple Pay, and who want crypto settlement without a traditional merchant account.

Things to consider

Provider availability "varies by merchant location, buyer location, provider, payment method, currency, amount, and applicable restrictions," and no method is guaranteed worldwide. Customers may face an ID check on card orders. Settlement is in crypto, so you need a wallet and a plan for converting to local currency if you want it. Provider-funded card flows can be subject to provider refund and dispute rules. See the full pricing page before you decide.

Paymento describes itself as a non-custodial crypto payment gateway: funds go directly to a wallet you control, and its home page states that because sellers keep control of their own funds it offers privacy protection it calls "KYC-free" and lower fees.

Paymento fees (checked 11 October 2026)

Paymento fees (checked 11 October 2026)
ItemDetail
Bring Your Own Wallet0.5% per successful payment, after a $15 free credit that covers the first $3,000 processed
Embedded Wallet0.5% + $0.20 per payment, funds held in a store wallet only you can authorise; network fee paid when you settle
Monthly feeNone; unlimited stores on BYOW
Example on a $20 order$0.10 (BYOW) or $0.30 (Embedded)

Key features

  • Payment links and QR codes for fixed or customer-defined amounts, created from a no-code interface after you create a store.
  • Webhooks on payment events to deliver digital products or grant access automatically.
  • Telegram integration that automates subscription access and removal for channel owners; a useful sign of how it handles chat-based selling even though WhatsApp has no equivalent bot API for small sellers.
  • Recurring payment links are described as coming "in the next update" on the payment-link page, so do not plan around them yet.

Best for

Sellers who only need crypto, want the lowest percentage and prefer that the gateway never holds their funds.

Things to consider

Crypto only: a customer without a wallet cannot pay. The terms of service (effective 12 May 2025) prohibit facilitating illegal activity and infringing intellectual property, and disputes go to arbitration in the Cayman Islands. Non-custodial also means refunds are manual transfers from your own wallet.

3. BTCPay Server: free, self-hosted and no account at all

BTCPay Server is free and open-source software, not a company. Its FAQ states that it lets you receive Bitcoin on-chain and over Lightning, plus altcoins, "directly, with no fees, transaction cost or a middleman," and that it is non-custodial: payments go straight to your wallet.

Key features

  • No fees and no KYC because there is no provider; you run the software on a server or use a third-party host.
  • Payment buttons, invoices and a point-of-sale app that generate links and QR codes you can share in WhatsApp.
  • Lightning support for small, fast payments.

Best for

Technically confident sellers who want zero fees and full control, and who sell to customers already holding Bitcoin.

Things to consider

The FAQ is explicit: "there is no e-mail, live-chat or phone support." You maintain the server, back up the wallet and handle every refund. There is no fiat conversion built in, and no card acceptance at all. If you use a third-party host, you are trusting that host's terms instead.

Not ranked today

OxaPay offers payment links at 1.5% that can be shared through Telegram, SMS, email or chat, but its terms, read today, require you to declare that your business is not registered in the United States (including its territories), Hong Kong, Bangladesh, Bolivia and several sanctioned countries, which rules it out for the US sellers this article is written for. NOWPayments was not re-verified for this article.

Fees and settlement explained for chat commerce

Chat sales skew small: a $15 to $60 order is typical. At that size the fixed component matters as much as the percentage.

Fees and settlement explained for chat commerce
$20 orderPayMeGatePaymento BYOWPaymento EmbeddedBTCPay
Gateway fee$0.20 + provider fee$0.10$0.30$0
Who pays network feesConfigurable; provider and network fees set by the underlying providersCustomer on BYOW; you on settlement for EmbeddedCustomer (on-chain) or negligible (Lightning)

Settlement asset matters too. PayMeGate pays out in crypto such as USDC, which holds its dollar value but still needs an exchange or an on-ramp partner if you want it in a bank account. Paymento and BTCPay pay in whatever coin the customer sent, so a Bitcoin payment is a Bitcoin balance until you convert it.

How to integrate a payment gateway with WhatsApp

  1. Create the gateway account. PayMeGate's signup asks for a business name and your payout wallets; Paymento asks you to create a store; BTCPay needs a server or host.
  2. Generate a link per order. In the dashboard, enter the amount and a description that matches the chat (customer name, item, date). Each link should be unique so you can reconcile it.
  3. Send payment links in WhatsApp with the order summary, the price including any fees you pass on, and your refund terms in one message. On the WhatsApp Business app, save this as a quick reply; on the WhatsApp Business API, send it as an interactive message with a button.
  4. Confirm from the webhook or dashboard, not from a screenshot. Buyers can fake a "paid" screenshot in seconds; a webhook cannot be faked. PayMeGate's API returns an order status from created to settled, and the dashboard shows the same.
  5. Deliver and record. Keep the order reference, the payment confirmation and the chat export for your accounting. If you outgrow manual links, PayMeGate's payment gateway page and API documentation cover the REST flow with scoped keys and test mode.

Risks and compliance for WhatsApp sellers

  • AML and sanctions duties are yours. A document-light gateway does not remove your obligation to know who you sell to where the law requires it, or to refuse buyers in sanctioned jurisdictions.
  • Card-network rules still apply to card payments, even when they settle in crypto. Misdescribing goods, selling prohibited items or hiding the true merchant can lead to the underlying provider blocking your orders.
  • Chargebacks and refunds. On-chain crypto is irreversible after confirmation, but your customers still have refund rights under consumer law, and provider-funded card flows may carry dispute rules. Publish a refund policy in your WhatsApp Business profile.
  • Acceptable use. All three options prohibit unlawful business; Paymento's terms specifically bar intellectual-property infringement, and PayMeGate says it may restrict access for prohibited use. Sellers of digital goods should hold the rights to what they sell.
  • Tax. Crypto settlement is income at the value received, and later conversion can create a second taxable event in many countries. Keep records per order.
  • Account security. Use scoped API keys, enable two-step verification on WhatsApp Business, and never share your payout wallet seed phrase with anyone, including "support" accounts that message you first.

Frequently asked questions

What payment gateway can I use for WhatsApp Business?

Outside India, any gateway that issues shareable payment links works with WhatsApp Business as a de facto WhatsApp payment gateway: PayMeGate for card and crypto links, Paymento and BTCPay Server for crypto. In India, the WhatsApp Business Platform supports in-chat payments through Razorpay, PayU, BillDesk and Zaakpay.

Can I send money through WhatsApp in the USA?

No. WhatsApp Pay is not available in the United States, WhatsApp Pay business payments are not offered to US merchants, and Meta has not announced a launch date. US sellers and buyers use payment links instead.

In which countries is WhatsApp payments available?

WhatsApp Pay works in India (UPI), Brazil (Meta Pay with cards and bank transfers) and Singapore for business payments only, according to YCloud's and Infobip's guides read today.

How do I enable the WhatsApp payment option?

In India or Brazil, open WhatsApp, go to Payments, add a bank account or card and set a UPI PIN or Meta Pay PIN; that activates WhatsApp Pay for personal transfers and payments on WhatsApp to businesses. In India, net banking and cards are offered by the merchant's payment partner at checkout. In other countries there is no option to enable; you send a payment link from a gateway.

What are the top payment gateways for WhatsApp payments in the US?

For WhatsApp payments in the US there is no native option, so the useful gateways are the ones with shareable links: PayMeGate for cards and crypto, Paymento for crypto, BTCPay Server for self-hosted Bitcoin, and mainstream processors such as Stripe or PayPal if you can pass their verification. Our ranking covers the first three because they do not require merchant document uploads.

Which payment gateway does not require KYC?

PayMeGate does not request identity or business-document uploads at merchant signup, Paymento describes itself as KYC-free for sellers, and BTCPay Server has no signup. Customer checks can still apply on card payments, and none of this removes your own legal duties.

Generate it in your gateway dashboard with the amount and description, copy it, and paste it into the WhatsApp chat with the order summary. Confirm payment from the gateway, not from the buyer's screenshot.

How do I request money on WhatsApp?

In India and Brazil, WhatsApp Pay has a built-in request option in the chat. Elsewhere, payment requests are simply a message with a payment link and the amount; PayMeGate, Paymento and BTCPay all generate links for a fixed amount so the customer cannot change it.

Can I integrate WhatsApp payments with my website or CRM?

Yes, through the gateway rather than WhatsApp. PayMeGate's REST API creates orders and returns a link you can send from any tool, and its webhooks update your records; the WhatsApp Business API itself only handles payments natively in India.

Are payments through WhatsApp safe?

WhatsApp Pay transactions require a UPI PIN or card authentication, WhatsApp messages are end-to-end encrypted in transit, and gateway links move the card or crypto step to a hosted page, so no payment details sit in the chat. The main risks are social: fake payment screenshots, impersonation and phishing links, which is why confirmation should always come from the gateway.

Who are high-risk merchants, and which MCC codes are high risk?

Card networks treat categories such as subscriptions and digital goods, adult content, gambling, travel, nutraceuticals, CBD and crypto services as elevated risk, and assign them merchant category codes that processors price or decline accordingly. PayMeGate's FAQ names lawful IPTV, digital goods, subscriptions and hosting among the categories it serves, and its about page describes the company as a software layer connecting merchants to independent payment providers.

Can I do P2P without KYC?

Person-to-person crypto transfers between self-custodied wallets involve no intermediary, so no KYC is applied by a gateway. Exchanges and on-ramps apply their own verification when you convert to or from fiat.

Is there a payment limit for WhatsApp Pay in India?

Yes. WhatsApp Pay follows UPI rules: Infobip and Razorpay cite ₹100,000 per transaction for personal transfers, with daily caps, while Infobip reports merchant UPI transactions through the Business API of up to ₹5,00,000. Limits can change with regulation, so check the Payments screen in the WhatsApp app.

Is Razorpay a payment gateway or a payment processor?

Razorpay is a full-stack payment gateway and aggregator in India, and one of the gateways Meta names for native WhatsApp payments there. It is not available to US merchants.

What happens if a customer's payment fails inside WhatsApp?

With a payment link, the customer simply retries or you issue a new link; the order status stays unpaid in your dashboard and the order details are untouched. With crypto, an underpayment shows as partially paid, and the gateway's rules decide whether the order completes.

Can I take recurring payments from WhatsApp customers?

Not natively. PayMeGate's pages describe per-order links and plugins rather than automatic card debit, and Paymento's recurring links are announced but not yet live. The practical method is a reminder message with a fresh link each period.

Final verdict

Outside India and Brazil, where WhatsApp Pay and the WhatsApp Business API process payments inside the app, "payment gateway for WhatsApp" really means "payment link for WhatsApp", and the right one is whichever your customers can pay without friction. On that test PayMeGate comes first: a single link accepts cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal and crypto, onboarding asks for no identity or business documents, the fee begins at 1% plus the provider's charge, and funds settle to a wallet under your control. Paymento is the stronger choice for crypto-only sellers who want 0.5% and non-custodial payouts, while BTCPay Server costs nothing for sellers prepared to host it themselves. Whichever you choose, verify every payment through the gateway rather than a screenshot, publish your refund terms, and remember that light onboarding does not lighten your compliance duties.
